Proximity to the nation's capital during an election year has inspired the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) to present "Elect-a-Pet 2016," a political spin on our already spirited annual photo competition. Pet candidates belonging to Canine, Feline, and Small Animals parties will engage in a political race to secure their name on their party's ballot, each vying for the coveted office of Alexandria's 2017 Animal of the Year. At the conclusion of the election, the AWLA will publish a colorful, full-sized calendar celebrating all of the candidates put forward in the election; The winning Pet Elect will be featured on the front cover of the calendar; Running Mates and Members of the Cabinet will also be awarded.
The photo contest is one of the AWLA's most important annual fundraisers, encouraging donations critical to helping local animals in need.
The entry fee to enter your favorite furry candidate is $30 (one entry per photo). Votes cost $1.00 each. Entries and votes can be purchased online, by email to

PARTY SUPPORT
The winners of the top spots in the calendar are based on total votes among all candidates. The first place winner in each party (dogs, cats and small animals) will win a highlighted spot in our special
Canine Caucus,
Feline Filibuster, and We Eat Greens Party calendar spreads. Every pet candidate will appear in and receive a copy of the calendar.
Off the grid
Honor a pet's memory or other hallmark when you reserve an empty grid space (before and after the numbered squares) for their photo (first come, first served). Just choose one favorite photo, choose a month, and pay! Grid squares measure 1.5 inches by 1.5 inches; two lines of text, 25 characters each, can be added. Don't delay: each month only has a limited number of squares (between 4 and 7) in each grid. Each grid space costs $300, and your purchase is tax-deductible.
