In summer 2010, Freddie was rescued by the BCSPCA from a puppy mill/animal hoarder, and transferred to the Victoria shelter, where we met and fell in love with him. We fell in love not only with his sweet brown eyes, but with his courage. Given no particular reason to trust humans again, Freddie decided to trust us. He let us teach him how to play with toys, to believe that his food bowl was all his and that he would always have plenty to eat and drink, warmth and security and never again anything to be afraid of. And he taught us the lesson all animals impart to humans: how to love unconditionally, how to trust despite trauma, and the joy of living in the now. Freddie’s bravery is a daily reminder of how much more we can do to face whatever it is confronting us, as his love reminds us that, in the words of Emily Dickinson, ‘Love is Immortality.’
