A Little Story of Love
No one knows how the blind and deaf senior pup came to be abandoned in a ditch on BC’s Highway of Tears, but her condition told a sad tale of lengthy neglect and abuse. Frightened and alone, she was rescued by a local shelter and transferred to the Abbotsford BCSPCA where a team of veterinarians and shelter workers began their hard work and magic.
Dubbed “Betty”, she was bathed and fed, and her injuries were treated with deep caring and kindness. Betty was so terrified in this unknown world, she had to be leashed to be fed. Assessed with an assortment of ailments, the shelter was worried they would not be able to find a home for this special girl, but the angels were working overtime on this case.
In another part of the province two people were looking to adopt a special needs dog. They were ready and their hearts were open. Scrolling through BCSPCA dog adoption site, they found this hopeful ad:
“Meet Betty!
This lovely mature girl is looking for her forever retirement home.
Betty loves to relax in a sunbeam, eat anything she can and be around her person. She is going to require a calm home with a consistent routine because Betty is deaf and mostly blind. We know that Betty can see shapes and shadows but has no ability to hear. So off-leash walks and parks would not be a good fit for this senior. She would do best in a relaxing environment with no other pets or any children. This lovely girl is fully house trained and enjoys cuddles! Just like all senior pets, she will require regular vet checkups and grooming.”
This sad little face, confused and fearful, plucked the heartstrings of that family miles away and soon enough, they were in a car coming to meet their new little family member. At the shelter, the little dog and her new humans took one look at each other and fell in love. They sat together cuddling for hours.
And, in a couple of days, Betty was ready to leave her temporary home and go to her new forever home. Her new humans have worked hard on her health and fitness. Betty has been renamed Maisy and she has visited the doggie ophthalmologist. After two procedures, she has now regained substantial vision – enough to watch the hummingbirds outside her new windows. She will always be deaf, but she and her humans are learning sign language.
Maisy already knows a special universal request though, “May I have some cuddles, please?” She is surrounded by love and has her own special angels to live with in her forever home.
