I ran a small rescue 13 years ago and immediately after losing my beloved rescued pit, I was asked to take in 2 pups who were to be euthanized. I hesitated as I was still grieving but could not let these two pups die. Niko was just 8 weeks and no one seemed to want to adopt her. The other pup was adopted and Niko then advanced into that awkward stage of lengthening and looking goofy. She had the cutest habits and I fell in love with her. All of my friends and family said they had never met a dog like her- so composed and when she loved you, you felt like you earned it. In the almost 14 years we have been together, she has been my constant companion, and I have grown to believe, my soulmate. She makes a special noise when she needs my attention, she can look in my eyes and I know what she is saying. She got me through the death of my mother, aunt, grandmother, and out of a bad relationship and was my only companion at times when I wondered if anyone would know or care if I died. I kept living many times because of her. She is now nearing the end of her life and we will likely be parted soon. I know that we will meet again in another place and be reunited. Every night I touch her fur, her paws, smell her neck when I kiss her goodnight and try to burn it all into my memory in preparation for the day she isn't physically here anymore because spiritually, she will be in my heart forever.
