Oliver already had a name when he was adopted, but his middle name is also a reference to Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist.” Mr. Brownlow is the man who adopted Oliver. “Don’t turn me out of doors to wander in the streets again. Let me stay here,” said Oliver. The 1933 film version of the novel ends with Oliver asking “You’re going to keep me with you always, Mr. Brownlow?” The old man replies “Of course, Oliver, always.” And so it is with this sweet and gentle boy.
