Pet's Story or Bio
I stepped out onto my porch just as the Boys appeared in an opening of an overgrown fencerows. I held up my arms like I had treats and called out to them.
These were the two most pitiful tattered, dirty and smelly almost a dog I've ever met. We feel in love at first glance. Cockelburs were so thick it would hurt to pet or stroke them. The Boys could not fully move their legs or hold up their heads for all the matted hair and burs.
The boys were so skittish I could not approach them with scissors or brushes for many weeks so I picked burs out by hand for hours and days and weeks.
The Boys made all the decisions about where and how fast our relationship went and slowly we gained trust.
It took me a few weeks of ads and asking around to get the story. The Boys are brothers , thee years old. Originally bought to guard a cattle herd about three miles from me. The Boys did not take to the cattle and they behaved as adolescent Pyrenees. The owner tried to tether the Boys but after fighting at the collars for days the Boys lay down to die.
The owner then set them free to wander.
The Boys free roamed for two years. They made some friends, found and fought and stole food.
But they made more enemies than friends and they Soon had a reputation as nuisance dogs.
One famer was so upset he threatened to shoot them. I asked this farmer to give me a chance to settle the Boys and asked him instead to contact me if ever they crossed his farm again.
The next weeks and months were intense, to settle these brothers that have been free roaming for two years. I spent time with them, I ate with them , I slept with them, I talked to them. I put my life on hold for weeks to stay with them. They did roam a few more times and each time I thought it may be the end for my Boys.
It's been an amazing journey. Now the boys are making up for those two years of gypsy life. They have learned about my fencing and gates. They did not eat my Sheltie, they had never been inside a house before but now they use the doggie door and sleep inside in the AC.
You would not recognise these Boys as the dogs that wandered onto my farm a few months ago.
There was a good dog deep inside the boys . The Boys made all the decisions, I just followed their lead.
