Appalachian Great Pyrenees Rescue (AGPR) provides shelter, re-homing assistance, and funds for medical treatment for approximately one hundred Great Pyrenees each year. These dogs come to us from various shelters in the state of Virginia and surrounding areas as well as from owners who wish to surrender their Pyr. We are an all-volunteer organization and receive no compensation for our efforts other than the satisfaction of educating the public, caring for Great Pyrenees dogs in need and helping to permanently place them in their forever homes. Our network consists of a small number of volunteers who locate abandoned Pyrs, screen adoption applications, do home visits, transport, and place Pyrs who come into our program. We rely entirely on donations for support.

Our Mission
The mission of Appalachian Great Pyrenees Rescue is to help unite Great Pyrenees dogs with their prospective new homes. We also help reunite lost dogs with their owners and provide guidance for those folks who think that they might need to find a new home for their Great Pyrenees.

Our Goals
  • To retrieve Pyrs from shelters or other sources so they may live to see another day.
  • To accept Pyrs from owners who could not properly care for them.
  • To accept Pyrs who are failed livestock guardian dogs.
  • To evaluate all Pyrs brought to our rescue in order to determine and provide necessary vet care.
  • To only place Pyrs that have been neutered or spayed (to aid in the reduction unwanted pets) by having the necessary surgical procedures performed before placement.
  • To provide a safe, healthy and loving environment to the rescued Pyrs until they can be rehomed.
  • To find responsible, stable, safe, loving new homes for all rescued Pyrs as soon as reasonably possible, so they can start their "new lives" quickly.
  • To provide socialization and training to increase the chances of successful placement.
  • To thoroughly screen applicants before making placement decisions.
  • To provide education to prospective adopters about the rescue program, the breed and the requirements for taking care of Pyrs.
  • To be a resource post-adoption for all Pyr owners.
