I adopted Phoebe, an Australian shepherd and Catahoula leopard dog cross, from Save Our Strays in Enterprise, Alabama, in October 2004, soon after the deaths of my dad and my previous dog and the destruction of my home by hurricane Ivan. She made that year infinitely better. "PhoeBeast" is the smartest, most stubborn, most aloof dog I've ever known, and I love her just as she is. In this photo, taken in March 2014, she is micromanaging my telework and showing off her ear-span.
