Before I proposed to my wife, she told me that she didn't want an engagement ring, she wanted an engagement dog. There was a surprising amount of logistical planning to get that to work. So I sent a long email to a few shelters in the Carolinas explaining my quest for an engagement dog. The next day, I got a call from SQ Rescue in Columbia, SC who asked, "How do you feel about hound dogs?"

I woke up early the next Saturday and drove down to meet a hound named Fred. People always ask if he's a big beagle. He's a Treeing Walker Coonhound.
