Scout came to our family from a rescue service while we were living in the north of England. She was four months old, just about, and had been abandoned in a remote village in the Yorkshire Dales. I thought from the first time I saw her that she would be an exceptional dog. And she was--smart, great with children, interested in everything. England is a nation of dog lovers, and Scout quickly became the most popular dog in our neighborhood. She was with us for fifteen years. Scout was my comfort through health scares, family deaths, difficult moves, and when my children, one by one, left the nest. She loved the children. She adored my husband. But she was my ally, my constant companion and most loyal friend. We lost her this last New Year’s Eve, to renal failure. I think of her every day.
