Artist Statement (include type of art, techniques & materials used, what it means to you)This is Gaia, Greek goddess and mother of the Earth. There is something mystical about her; she represents healing and exudes a peaceful form of grace that feels supernatural. When my father was diagnosed with a trigeminal schwannoma the size of a golf ball right in the middle of his brain, he was not given a good prognosis. Yet somehow, with the incredible grace and skill of his team of doctors and nurses, he survived, making a full recovery. This mixed media watercolour, pencil, and ink artwork is an ode to those healthcare practitioners and my father who exemplified compassion, care, and superhuman strength respectively in the face of undue adversity.
Bio (include your age, tumor type and date of diagnosis)I am 25 and the daughter of a trigeminal schwannoma cancer survivor. Many of my family are also survivors of breast cancer and two others are currently battling lung and pancreatic cancer. The prevalence of cancer in my family is a scary thing to think about when I wonder about my future. I hope for healing and peace - as represented in my artwork - for myself and my family despite whatever the future may hold.
