Inspiration:
The figure in this painting is inspired by my art teacher’s brother, who has quietly fought against a brain tumor. I often noticed a trace of sadness when my teacher spoke about him, but at the same time, there was always a sense of admiration for the strength and determination he showed.
At first, the scene is filled with darkness — the cold walls, the silence of the hospital, and the heavy weight of illness, making it seem as if all hope had disappeared. Yet behind him, a soft and growing light fills the room. It is not just sunlight; it symbolizes the love and support from family, friends, and everyone who stands by his side. Even in the darkest moments, their presence shines like a beacon, reminding him — and all of us — that we are never truly alone.
Through this artwork, I hope to express that it is the unseen light — the power of love and companionship — that helps people survive the hardest times and gives them the courage to keep going.
Artist Bio: Tell Us Your StoryMy name is Yu (Jade) Niu. I am a high school student and a passionate lover of art. I enjoy expressing emotions, telling stories, and capturing meaningful moments through painting. To me, art is not only a way to express myself, but also a bridge — a way to help others understand topics that are often difficult to talk about. Participating in the “Art of Surviving” contest holds special meaning for me, not only because I want to show care and respect for brain tumor patients, but also because I feel a deep emotional connection to the theme.
My own grandfather has also suffered from brain-related issues. I was the one who took him to the hospital that day, and I witnessed how, almost overnight, both his body and spirit changed — from a proud, upright veteran to someone who could no longer walk or speak clearly. The man who once carried me on his shoulders had suddenly become as fragile as a child. That moment made me truly understand the emotional weight this illness brings to families.
Through this artwork, I hope to make a small contribution — to help others better understand, respect, and support this community, and to bring light and warmth to those still living in the shadows.
