Opening its doors in 2013, Auburn Valley Humane Society enriches the lives of companion animals and people through animal sheltering, programs, and community engagement. Auburn Valley Humane Society is much more than just "the pound." AVHS is a local, independent 501c3 non-profit organization that relies on pet licensing and lost pet housing agreements with the City of Auburn, shelter services, Thrift Store sales, clinic services, and generous donations from the community to fund shelter operations, humane education, and human-pet services programs. AVHS also serves King and Pierce Counties for owner relinquishment and pet adoptions. NW Spay and Neuter Center provides high-quality spay and neuter services and preventative wellness services to those income-qualified in western Washington.

The AVHS shelter opened on January 1, 2013, and partners with the City of Auburn for the housing of lost and stray animals within the City of Auburn. AVHS also manages the pet licensing contract for the City of Auburn. The AVHS Thrift Store & More opened on July 31, 2014, as an additional means of funding the shelter and educational programs of AVHS. Northwest Spay & Neuter merged with AVHS in January 2022.
