My dear old 14 and a half year lab Buddy, had passed away and I said I would never have another dog. It was just too painful.

Way up at Fort Laird, North West Territories, my dear friend and nurse, Shannon had a six week stint at a clinic on a first nations settlement. She was due to come back to Vancouver. I received a phone call from her on the plan as she was flying back, "could you pick me up at the airport, I need a ride home, and oh, I have a present for you." So I drove out to YVR thinking of some nice Indian jewelry, or a home knit sweater.

I found Shannon waiting for her luggage, and beside her, about as big as a minute, was a little black dog with sticking up hair, well just really young. "Hi," said Shannon, "this is a little 7 week old pup who really needs a home..." And I said, "Oh, she is as cute as a Button," and I took her leash and we started walking her to the car.

That was 1 and a half years ago, her name is Buttons, and she is the love of my life. Not sure what breed she is, lots of guesses from everyone, like Lab/boarder collie/ terrier - who knows. She loves everyone, and is wagging her tail at all times. If she is naughty, I tell her that she has sticky up hair and big girl teeth so she should behave! I do believe Buddy is up there watching me and he does approve of Buttons.
