I am a volunteer at Greyhaven Wild Parrot Refuge's Mount Pleasant Bird House which houses the birds remaining from the closed refuge on Vancouver Island. This bird, Hito, was a rescue budgie given to us by our bird vet, Dr. Anne McDonald, who received the Humanitarian of the Year award this year for her work with the Wild Parrot Refuge surviving birds. Hito was a wonderfully companionable bird who didn't live as long as he should have. He had acquired diabetes from being improperly handled by his previous owners. In addition to the piano keyboard, he would deposit himself on the computer keyboard, on our heads, and flew happily from his companion bird's side to us. He generally made the most of his cheerful life.
