BioGeorgia was found behind our barn with both eyes closed shut with infection. She was about 6 weeks old.
Sadly she lost one eye. The vet wanted to remove both eyes but I said to give the remaining eye a chance because I had seen her reacting to light.
Sure enough she began to follow objects and I knew her one eye would be fine, except for a bit of scarring.
She is now almost 2 years old and very healthy and happy and does not let her disability affect her. In fact I don't even think she realizes it!
It is a strong reminder to have your pets neutered and spayed.
I witnessed Georgia's mom on several occasions before we found Georgia sick and in danger of dying. She was a small siamese and was not feral. I tried to entice her with food to get close to her but she was too afraid. I believe she had at least one other litter of kittens.
Georgia's mom was probably abandoned or at most left to defend herself out in the woods. She probably left Georgia to fend for herself because she would have been a liability to the rest of the cat family because of her infected eyes.
I never knew what happened to the other kittens but I'm sure they did not have an easy life.
The thought that cats can defend themselves in the wild and take care of their food needs is a false one.
They may be able to survive but will encounter predators, injuries, illness, starvation and quite often death.
Georgia was lucky.
