Leia was a tiny, malnourished street kitten living alone on the streets of Banda Aceh, Indonesia, when I met her last May while I was working at the local hospital. I was typing away on my laptop at a café when Leia ambled by on the street outside, and as soon as she laid eyes opon me, she squeaked loudly and sprinted directly towards me. To my astonishment, she jumped onto my lap, curled up, and fell asleep within minutes. I fell in love with her quirky personality immediately and I knew there was no way that I could leave her there, and so I took her back to my apartment (with the blessing of my cat-loving landlord) and began the long and arduous process of getting her veterinary care and ensuring that all of the documentation was in order to bring her back to Canada with me. With the help of several amazing local veterinarians, it all worked out in the end, and Leia now lives with me and her Siamese cat sister Bella in Vancouver. She enjoys running laps around my apartment, watching pigeons through the window, going for walks outside on a leash and occasionally in my purse, cuddling on my lap while I do work, and--as she will always be a street kitten at heart-- digging through garbage.
