Chewbacca or better known as Chewey came to our family as a rescue in 2004 at approximately 9-10 months of age. He had many behaviour issues. We took him to training classes together as a family. We had a dog specialist come into our home to give us insight on how to better handle this rambunctious young dog. We better learned that he was considered an Australian Kelpie Cross. These dogs were traditionally bred to help heard sheep and were extremely active dogs. We were encouraged to give Chewey lots of “jobs” to help him understand his role in a suburban household. In early 2009 Chewey and I began to pursue jogging. My ex had moved out and the kids were busy teenagers. Chewey and I started just going around the block and slowly built up to 10-20km runs and even longer hikes. We went on adventures all over BC! We had found our place together and we would go out in rain or sleet or snow but our most favourite was Sun! I have 100’s of photos of our endeavours together. Eventually in 2016 Chewey was forced to retire due to arthritis. Last year I n June 2017 at 14ish years of age Chewey passed. He had his first and final double cheeseburger from McDonalds and left surrounded by his family. Not a day goes by that I don’t miss him. I am so grateful that we rescued him and that we pursued. Anyone who knew him can attest to his greatness!
