Animal BioAndrew was a birthday gift from my grandsons. He was one of the kittens from their cats litter. He was three months old when he joined me and my three other cats in July of 2017. Him and my six month old tuxedo kitten Henry became constant companions doing everything together.
Andrew, or Andy Pandy as he became affectionately known, was a character. A little cat with a huge personality. He was the only one of my kitties who ate, and adored, people food. No matter what I had to eat or drink little Andy demanded, very sweetly, a taste. He was more voracious than discriminating in his tastes and shared everything from salad to burritos, and even a sip of tea.
Andy also simply adored children. Whenever there were little ones in the house he was right there with them, engaging them in games of 'I tap you now you tap me, or allowing himself to be carried like a baby, dressed up or tucked into his basket. As you can see by the picture he was quite the experienced sleeper and could pass out in just about any position, especially after playing with the kids all day.
My goal in entering my sweet Andrew in this calendar contest is to raise awareness of feline infectious peritonitis. Unfortunately little Andy died from FIP this past March 2, 2018. He would have turned a year old on April 25.
From the time I noticed that there was something a little off with him, until we were at the vet for the final time was only two weeks. FIP is an absolutely insidious condition that completely destroys it's victims. As my vet said, there is no treatment and no cure. It is caused by a rogue coronavirus and is 100% fatal. At this writing it's not known what causes the coronavirus to take such a deadly turn in some cats, but my hope is that there will be a vaccine someday.
Thanks to Dr. Maarhuis and staff at the Cottonwood Veterinary Clinic for the excellent care they gave to my Andy in his last couple weeks.
