I found Chance as a three-week old kitten, abandoned by his mother. Two of his siblings around him were already dead; he and one sister left alive. I scooped them up, rushed them to the vet. Chance had a very obvious wound on his front paw that had been infested with maggots - all that was left of the paw was bones and tendons that were clearly visible. I thought he would need to be humanely euthanized, or at least that his paw would need amputation. The vet cleaned his paw and the two kittens came home with me overnight, so I could stay up with them for snuggles and bottle feeding around the clock as they were nearly starved to death. The next morning they were surrendered to our local SPCA branch for care, and they went to a foster home with a "mom" who worked at a vet clinic. Within a day, we had arranged to adopt Chance (named that first night he spend with us because he got a second chance at life) when he was ready for his forever home, even though we already had a senior cat and a second, 3-month old kitten at home (and three Chihuahuas!) already. We were able to visit Chance at his foster home while he recovered, and unbelievably his paw was able to heal quickly with just some hydro therapy! He now has what we call his "frankenfoot"...more like a club foot than a paw, some of this toes are fused together and missing and his claws stick out at every which angle, but it doesn't slow him down! Today Chance is a happy and healthy 1.5 year old beauty of a boy, the sweetest cat on the planet and a wonderful addition to our home.
