Animal BioI first met Kira when I was a volunteer at the Surrey BC SPCA. I knew I had to adopt the moment I met her- I knew I was her forever home. She was seized as part of a cruelty investigation and came with some baggage, but nothing we couldn't work through together. Her counter surfing, separation anxiety, cow chasing, fear and anxiety ridden ways soon began to smooth out as she realized she could trust her new loving family. As bouncy and crazy as she was in her younger years, she was so gentle, calm and loving around my grandparents and around children. She had a way of knowing.
Kira and I were instantly inseparable. I moved away from home and took her up north with me to attend university. It wasn't long until I got her brother, Grissom, whom she lovingly accepted into our little family.
We have camped and hiked and explored the entire province together from the beaches of Tofino to the northern reaches of the province, and everywhere in between. It is rare that this girl (and her brother) stay home. It's just not the same without them!
Kira will be 13 years old this summer- I can't believe how much time has flown by, and how much we have experienced together. In her older years, she enjoys walks by the river, raw veggies from mom's dinner, and is always down for a road trip. Occasionally, she still gets into trouble (she is part husky, after all). But her zest for life and insatiable thirst for mischief keep me laughing, and so grateful for her undeniably beautiful presence.
This girl has been with me through the highest highs of my adult life, and my lowest lows. She has this way of just knowing when to provide comfort and companionship, and when to be goofy and light. One look into those baby blues will have you feeling like she can see right into your soul - she just knows. Regardless of what's going on, she's always there for a snuggle. This girl is the definition of unconditional love, and she has taught me so much.
