Dorian is a rescue who came into our lives 2 months after I lost my mother to cancer 2 and a half years ago. To this day, I firmly believe that he somehow knew I needed him and chose me. I was a wreck, I was mourning, I needed companionship. The week that Dorian became a part of our family, my partner and I, went to visit some cats, just "to have a look". By no means did we intend to make an adoption that day! However, while visiting, Dorian reached his little arm out of the enclosure, and made the most intense eye contact with me, as if saying "hey, you're hurting. I can help". We asked to bring him out and spend some time with him and I immediately knew that he had to come home with us. Since then, Dorian has been the most perfect fit for our family. He's affectionate and gentle. He's so attentive to his people where he'll come when he's called, jump up on my lap when invited, and even help me get my yoga on. This picture, though, captures the best of his qualities. I'm not sure what exactly was in his past but I know there was abuse and neglect. He went through a stage after he first joined our household where he was a timid and uncertain. Now, he is so free and he trusts us. He comes to sleep as my little spoon each night and I wake up each morning with the image above. His belly is exposed, he's snoring softly, and his face is so relaxed. Seeing him this way reminds me that things are actually okay. His demeanor teaches me to breath a little easier each day.
