Llena and I found each other in Baja California in 2004. She was all ribs and teeth, almost small enough to hold in one hand, and I was in need of someone to love. Once she’d had a bath, had the sweetest scent I’ve ever smelled.
She travelled home with me to BC, where we spent 15.5 years as best friends. She became a back-country ski dog, a mountain biking buddy, and loved nothing more than a good climbing road trip. We ran endless trails together, until age and arthritis taught us the pleasure of slow toodles and soft beds.
She was my bestie, beside me through sickness and health and so many life changes; caring for her in her senior years was the sweetest, most poignant experience in the world. Her love and trust broke my heart wide open. My wild Baja dog was my Love-dog, my little bug, my best friend. She left on April 5, 2019, but my heart will carry her forever.
