Murphy was a rescue cat who had a great deal of trouble entering a home with other cats and spent his first few weeks under the bed lashing out at all who came near but in time he became Mr. Personality and just a big, gentle teddy bear. He who must be obeyed had a precisely timed set of rituals he never wavered from. At precisely 11pm he would peak around the corner of the den and signal that it was time to go to bed and would lay on my book or my knitting until I gave in. Then it was 5 minutes of belly rubs before he snuggled in for the night.
