Our Gerti-girl joined our family October 2021, an adoption from our local SPCA. Having grown up with a rescue-cat myself. It was our thought to once again welcome a rescue into our home. My husband and I committed to our 4 children, once we tackled a significant move from Victoria to Kelowna, we would search for a cat to adopt from the SPCA. And then, 1 week after moving, Gerti and our family got “matched”.
Gerti is a gift! Whether snuggling, or licking tears through the emotions of moving. Or having us belly-laughing over the energetic, acrobatic manoeuvres she braves to show-off. We are truly in love. Gerti is faithful and playful, loves to interact, chatting with us, running to us at the sound of her name, chases toys and even plays “tag” with us. Gerti is also clever and brave. She has sorted out how to open doors in the house. And upon introducing Gerti to the lifestyle of “indoor/outdoor” living this spring, she has embraced the great outdoors with bravado! Gerti has truly found a way to neighbour well. Having all the neighbours wrapped around her paw. She engages with those ready to interact. And even teases the dogs with eager interest in sorting out who they are, by fence walking to get a closer look. Gerti has figured out how to open our neighbours back door to say “hello”. She has become a little “therapy feline friend” for our neighbour’s rescue, who endured a much more traumatic past. Gerti has embraced a working “mindset” by hunting the yards of rodents. Yet leaves the birds to make their nests. Gerti comes indoors for mid-day naps and always for “bedtime”. Embracing the routines and talking to us during each transition.
Gerti has given us such a gift in the very nature of who she is! We are grateful for the joy and comfort she adds to our family.
