Melo’s story here began when he was rescued from a bad situation in Korea where he was part of the meat trade. An agency in Korea rescued him and his soon-to-be parents (Nicole and Ryan) saw his profile and immediately fell in love with the scruffy little ball of fur.
Melo arrived at YVR in Vancouver just before Christmas of 2023 and the connection was instant. Melo sat in the back seat with Nicole on the ride home and when he wasn’t staring up at Nicole with his big eyes, he was doing “happy rolls” in the back seat (which would soon become an every day event).
Melo settled in immediately and knew he was surrounded by love. He snuggled with his new parents and slept soundly for hours on end, knowing he was safe and sound.
Over time, Melo was introduced to so many people and dogs in the neighbourhood - quickly becoming a little celebrity who charmed everyone he met. He loved giving out little kisses to his favourite people, and greeting his four legged friends with big tail wags while out on his daily walks, and greeting the ladies at the Dog Patch with friendly barks to remind them he loved beef liver treats!
Every day was an adventure and a gift with the little dog that had been rescued from a bad situation. Walks, play time, chasing mom and dad around the house, naps, and lots and lots of snacks were the daily routine.
Melo’s attitude and resilience rubbed off on Nicole and Ryan who had both been through critical events working with in the first responder field. Happiness and love filled the home and it was as if Melo and his parents were meant to find each other.
Around December 2024, Melo got sick and after a few nights at Boundary Bay, it was discovered Melo had terminal cancer. He had a month of brave fighting where he still lit up the room and experienced love and joy, but he was tired and ultimately, he could not go on.
On a rainy December 26, 2024, Melo passed away in his home surrounded by his Mom and Dad. On a day that was pouring rain with no end in sight, the clouds parted and bright sunshine broke through - Nicole and Ryan believe that was Melo telling them he had made it; and he was happy and safe on the other side. It was his final burst of joy shining through.
Although Melo was only with us for a year, he opened our eyes to how much love one little being can spread. We want to share Melo’s story not only so his spirit lives on, but to highlight how rescuing a dog can make a difference in so many lives. Nicole and Ryan still take their nightly walks and spend time reminiscing about Melo and all the love they got to share.
We Miss you Melo! Thank you for all the love and laughter
