Hawkeye is one of the best-known dogs in Steveston, loved by so many locals. Hawkeye’s portrait was painted by a well-known local artist and it appears on greeting cards sold at local shops. He has also appeared on wine labels for eight of the Steveston Winemakers Proprietary Blends.

Hawkeye was born in 2012, and his breeder rode a Harley so every time he hears one, he gets excited. He loves to swim, walk, run, and play but most of all, he loves all the treats the neighbours and shops shell out to him, and there are lots! He loves children and seems to be a magnet to them wherever he goes.

Hawkeye is highly intelligent and has lots of tricks. He puts his toys in his toy box before going out for a walk and closes the door when he returns home. These tricks are all food motivated because he gets treats for doing them.

Just like a typical border collie, Hawkeye is great at obeying commands like sit, stay, lay down, drop it, shake a paw, heel, leave it, high five and dance. He knows which toys to retrieve and has a big vocabulary. This puppy rarely barks except to announce someone at the front door. He’s so gentle that he calms both nervous dogs and people afraid of dogs. Hawkeye is also very intuitive. He senses when someone is sick or upset and he stays close to comfort them.

A few years of service as a St. John’s Ambulance Therapy Dog, he and his master, went to St. Vincent’s Hospital once a week to visit the residents. He happily cleaned up any food dropped on the ground and made a significant difference to many of the people there. One lady in particular had not spoken for years during her time there but began to speak during their visits because she’d had a dog as a child.

Mental stimulation energizes Hawkeye and puzzles always intrigue him. He loves it when a toy is hidden, and he has to go and “look everywhere” to find it. The challenge of catching bubbles blown into the air can provide hours of enjoyment. One thing he has not learned to do yet is retrieve a can of Yellow Dog Chase My Tail Pale Ale out of the fridge for his master.
