Phil was a BREW beagle, a stray with a polka dot in the center of his forehead, who couldn’t hunt. He was left to his own survival skills before being rescued by BREW and adopted by us just about the time famed Yankee shortstop Phil Rizzuto passed in August 2007.
Our Phil could not catch or play ball. "Mr. Philly Cheesecake" could dig holes in the garden to perfection. He was a chewer of bedsheets, comforters, bedspreads that all bear perfectly round holes as testament to his ability; in addition he had the perfect poker face that feigned innocence when caught in the act. Phil was a guard dog; scaring away birds from the feeder because those seeds were really meant for him (and maybe for his sister Flora). Phil was a timekeeper and would remind us when it was time for breakfast , lunch, dinner, wine and of course bedtime snack--- did I mention there was always a little something for Phil (and Flora too) to munch?? Phil was a chowhound who would never say “no thank you” even if it was celery in the offing. He was always near the dinner table waiting for an errant crumb to drop and he would love to watch me cook for the same reason.
Phil was patient and kind, especially when children asked to pet him. He would sit perfectly still while they stroked his soft fur and ears. Phil was a cuddler; most nights he slept in my arms or right next to me.
We lost Phil February 17, 2019, and we miss him greatly.
RIP dear Mr. Philly Cheesecake.
