Pet's Story or BioGracie arrived at CASPCA seven years ago with 50 other dogs, all rescued from a hoarding situation in the County. I spotted her photo in an email from the shelter asking for donations to help with the sudden influx of so many dogs. My heart skipped a beat: she was a dead ringer for my much-loved Jack Russell terrier Harry, who had left us just three months earlier.
I was on the phone to CASPCA within two minutes, asking them to put a hold on her until I could get there. When a staff member put her in my lap, she was shaking all over and her heart was beating wildly. We sat on the lobby bench together--my hand on her heart--waiting for her to calm down. Finally, when her heartbeat slowed to normal, she turned her head toward me and shyly licked my nose. My heart melted. "We're golden, girlfriend," I whispered in her ear. "Let's do this!"
Before we walked out CASPCA's doors, I named her Gracie Harriet, in memory of sweet Harry, who I'm convinced had a hand (paw?) in bringing us together. "Grazie, Harry!" = Gracie Harriet. Today she is my Stinkbug, my Wild Child, my daily dose of sunshine, and my heart's delight. Here she is, channeling Barbie and Randy Rainbow. :-)
Thank you, CASPCA! And thanks in advance to everyone who votes for my irrepressible Gracie Harriet!
