Right now, cats are facing an overpopulation crisis in Canada. This crisis leads to an estimated 600,000 cats that are homeless or languishing in shelters each year. Many may never make it out of the shelter due to illness and are facing being euthanized. This is a community wide epidemic.

Shelters are doing everything they can to ensure the cats brought into their care have a happy outcome, but at this rate they do not have the resources to deal with the enormous number of unwanted cats.

What is the CFHS doing about it?
CFHS is educating communities on the ethical treatment of cats and increasing the value of these loving and affectionate companion animals. With your help, we are bringing radically different programming to our local Humane Societies and SPCAs to help restructure the shelter system to increase the number of adoptions and happy outcomes.

We are also working to create easily accessible spay neuter programs across the country, that are low cost and high volume. Innovative initiatives, like our national Just For Cats Festivals continue to celebrate cats and are helping to raise their value across Canada.

That's why campaigns like Cats & Gals and Cats & Bros are so important to our work. Not only do they help to help to raise awareness of the plight of our gentle feline friends, but also help us to educate the public that as little as a $1.00 donation can save a cat. That's right...$1.00 can save a cat.

The cost of not doing anything is too high with hundreds of thousands of cats being euthanized each year. With your help, we can continue to create cat friendly communities where they can thrive and we can all say that cats count in Canada.

About the CFHS
As Canada's voice for animal welfare, the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies drive positive, progressive change to end animal cruelty, improve animal protection and promote the humane treatment of all animals.

With the support of our donors, members and sponsors, we have earned our reputation of being the leader on critical issues which impact animal welfare in Canada. Our commitment to reducing companion animal overpopulation is reflected in our accomplishments to increase adoption, decrease euthanasia; while supporting homeless cats in Canada and ending the suffering of thousands of dogs trapped in puppy mills.

In addition to working to ensure the vigorous prosecution of animal abusers, we collaborate proactively with provincial and federal bodies to improve the legal framework governing animals. As a founding member of the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC), we play a crucial role in securing increased animal welfare for Canadian farm animals, and bringing an end to painful practices and intensive confinement on farms.

Every day, the CFHS is driven by one constant goal – to build a humane Canada.
