The world didn't start with a house; it started with a quiet, dark box in New Mexico. Then came the long journey toward the mountains—the air got crisper, and suddenly, I wasn't just a puppy anymore. I was Maisie, and I had a home.
Being half Schnauzer isn't just a look; it’s a calling. My paws were made for the earth. If there is something interesting happening six inches under the dirt, I’m the girl to find it. I put my shoulders into it, dirt flying behind me like a fountain, working until my nose is dusty and my heart is happy.
But as much as I love a good hole in the ground, my world revolves around one person: Murphy.
Murphy is my big brother, my North Star, and the coolest dog to ever come out of that same rescue. I could be in the middle of the best belly rub of my life—legs in the air, humans hitting that exact "sweet spot"—but if Murphy so much as looks my way, I’m gone.
"Sorry," I think as I bolt upright, leaving the humans holding thin air. "The King has moved. I must follow."
I spend my days practicing the art of the "Murphy-Distraction," nudging him or trotting by with a toy just to be near him. The desert box is a lifetime ago. Now, I have a brother to shadow, a yard to remodel, and a family that doesn't mind a little dirt on my nose.
