Animal Bio
Zoe - aka "zoe brown" was an "alberni special" who came to us in may 2011 from the First Nations Reserve near Port Alberni via the Errington SPCA. She was only 1 year old and for the first few months she was shy with strangers but we attended training classes and spent many hours walking the trails in our Nanoose Bay neighbourhood, and it wasn't long before she gained confidence and became well-known to all the regulars. Zoe (the wonder dog) had great enthusiasm for all outdoor activities and we shared many adventures with her - hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, X-C skiing. She also loved to chase sticks and balls and swim in big ocean breakers. Her favourite game was playing tag with her doggie pals in the forest. She was a consummate slalom expert who dodged trees and stumps and rocks at high speeds while running flat out in the forest. She also was a talented tracker and squirrel whisperer. Zoe had a special wisdom and compelling "zenergy" that attracted all kinds of people, most dogs and a few cats too. All who met her remembered her and were touched by her calm, generous, loving spirit. She was well known for being a dog who got along with all the other dogs, and was a long-time favourite at our local doggy daycare

Sadly, on Jan 26, 2021 at the age of 10¾ years, the inimitable Zoe Brown got her wings peacefully, with loved ones at her side. She had spleen cancer, but fortunately, none of us including our beautiful, exuberant girl had any idea that there was a time bomb in her belly - so she ran and played and chased and swam and gobbled up all her food right up to her last day with us.

We are so grateful to have had 9 ½ awesome, fun and inspirational years with Zoe. She taught us more than I can say about love and peace and patience and acceptance and living in the moment. We are slowly making our way through these first most heartbreaking days knowing that Zoe is in a peaceful, happy place – surrounded by loved ones where there is no pain or suffering. Our world was transformed by this beautiful, gentle, courageous and loving spirit dressed in a red fur coat – we are so much better for having shared life and countless adventures with her. We are forever grateful that she chose us to be her pack on that sunny day back in May 2011 at the SPCA in Errington.

In addition to those of us in her extended family pack, she will be dearly missed by many local merchants who spoiled her with treats whenever we took her shopping, the staff at Arrowsmith brewery who always welcomed her, the starbucks baristas at the drive-thru window (ready with treats & puppuccinos), all the staff and furry friends at Happy Hounds Daycare, Phyllis the cat (who generously gave Zoe one of her lives that carried us through the last few weeks), Leo – her adoring buddy, and most of all by Cochise her longtime boyfriend.

Rest in peace dear Zoe – remember the good times and we take comfort in the knowledge that we will hold you in our hearts forever and see your joyful expression and satellite ears when we close our eyes and hear the ocean waves.
