Please include a short paragraph that tells voters something fun or interesting about the cat(s) and other animals in the photo. Which cat is diabetic? Is one or more a DCIN rescue? How long have the animals been a part of your family? Give some interesting information about the animal(s) in the photo that will encourage others to vote for your photo.
Penny was a rescue I adopted in 2012. She was 3 1/2 yrs old and competed in some cat shows in her time at the rescue. She even won some ribbons! She was diagnosed with Feline Diabetes in 2013, at just 5 yrs old, and quickly achieved remission. After 14 months and a diagnosis of spinal arthritis, she lost that remission. She spent 10 months in insulin resistance before breaking through and finally getting regulated with high doses of Levemir and lots of home testing. Four months later, she was diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease and almost didn’t pull through. But she did get through that crash, and three months after she almost died, she achieved her SECOND remission from Feline Diabetes! She remained “diet controlled” through the next 17 months, all while living an A+ quality of life, despite the fact that she was in end-stage kidney disease. She succumbed to the kidney disease 11.15.17. Her legacy remains through our blog and social media while we help other diabetic cats! The biggest lesson Penny taught us was that the strong don’t give up ... when the will to win is there, we can defy the “odds”. Penny’s story is saving lives every day and inspiring all special needs pet parents!
