My Story
Everett was born on October 4, 2016 at MUSC. He was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome in utero at the 20 week anatomy scan. After he was born, he was taken immediately to the NICU until a bed was available for him in the pediatric heart unit. We held Everett for the first time at 8 days old. Everett underwent his first open heart surgery at 9 days old. He spent the next 2 months in the PCICU and 8D step down unit. Michael and I were not only first time parents, but also became Everett’s nurses as we learned to administer his medications; monitor his oxygen levels; and to make sure he was growing and thriving with his feeds. Everett was discharged on December 4, 2016. We excitedly and anxiously brought our precious son home. We all adjusted well to being home even in the midst of doctor visits every other week. Our family was a huge support to us and Everett. We celebrated our first Christmas as a family of three - it was a precious time for us. Everett had such a calm and sweet spirit - he hardly ever fussed. He was happy and content. He was our little buddy - our brave heart. On December 31, 2016, Everett went to be with Jesus. We miss him greatly! He taught us how to be brave. And we cling to the hope we have in Jesus knowing we will be with Everett one day soon.
