Photograph DescriptionI photographed this Yacare or Paraguayan caiman (Caiman yacare) in the Pantanal wetland region of Brazil. We spotted this caiman basking in the sun on the shore of a river with its mouth open: mouth gaping is a behavior that is common to several species of crocodilians and is believed to have a thermoregulatory effect by cooling off the reptiles when they are exposed to the sun. The facial expression of this caiman, which is resemblant of a grin, made me think of Tick-Tock the Peter Pan crocodile.
