Photograph Description
Crater Lake is almost 2000 feet deep and is the deepest lake in the United States. It was formed by Volcano Mazama over 7000 years ago. The only way onto the lake, is a strenuous hike down (and then back up) the mountainside. Once on the lake, it is peaceful and pure. Because of its remote location, Crater Lake National Park is the least visited National Park in the United States. Additionally, there are no rivers or streams flowing into the lake. Its only source of water is through rain and snow. The intense blue water is a combination of the lake's depth, scattered water molecules and sunlight. The water is so pure and clear, the vivid reflections create a magnificent kaleidoscope effect.
