Photograph DescriptionThis is a beloved, documentary-style photo of my grandparents, Sito and Gido—Arabic for grandmother and grandfather. Here, at ages 101 and 105, and in their 84th year of marriage they had just returned home after voting in the 2016 election. This would be their final time casting a ballot, and they did so with the same sense of duty and hope that shaped their lives. They voted at Roger Sherman Elementary School in Fairfield, CT, where one of their five children, daughter Joan, and my mother - taught first grade for nearly three decades. Into their centenarian years, they stayed deeply engaged—with their family, their country, their world and each other.
