Morning Fog

Photograph DescriptionI took this photograph in Eastern Greenland at dawn, when the first sun rays had just started dissipating a thick blanket of fog. The partial lifting of the fog revealed part of the mountains in the background and most of the glacier in the middle-ground, bathing the glacier and the seawater immediately in front of its face in warm, delicate sunlight and creating a chiaroscuro effect that contrasted the seawater that was still unlit. The iceberg in the foreground was still in the shade, and the remaining fog acted like a soft reflector, bouncing soft, indirect light on it. The lingering fog creates a sense of mystery and the panoramic format accentuates the wide expanse of the glacier.
