The continuous winds in White Sands National Park keep the dunes in a perpetual state of change. In the hour surrounding sunset, when the sun is closest to the horizon, the textures and contours of the sand become especially pronounced. Deep black shadows carve through the dunes while sharp, dramatic highlights illuminate their crests. The endless rolling landscape creates a dizzying visual effect as the repeating lines and patterns diminish into the distance. Resembling the static distortion of a glitching television screen, the scene plays tricks on the eye, blurring the boundary between natural landscape and optical illusion.
