Why do you love your rescue pet?
Elwood was a stray being fed along with his stray brother at an addictions recovery center downtown almost 20 years ago. Back then, when FIDO did humane dog trapping, we captured the boys and they came home with me. Elwood's brother was more social and was quickly adopted.
Elwood was much more fearful and stayed with me. It took him several months, but he gradually warmed up to me. And then to the whole world. He became the "dog's dog" at my house, making sure the newbies learned dog etiquette, and calmly inserting himself to break up dog squabbles.
He had a few quirky behaviors , including his obsession with digging massive holes throughout my yard, The shepherd in him made him a world class barker at anyone who walked past his house. He would also gently nip visitors in the rear when they turned their back to him. But he was a sweet old soul and lived to be 16 years old, passing onto doggy heaven several years ago.
