GARNA envisions an informed community that promotes the conservation of the unique natural, cultural, and historic resources of the greater Arkansas River region.
Mission:
GARNA, through community collaboration, inspires a conservation ethic by providing educational opportunities and experiences so that those who live, work and play in the Upper Arkansas Valley are motivated to take care of the natural resources and leave a legacy of responsible use of the natural environment.
About:
GARNA's activities take place in Chaffee, Fremont, and Lake Counties and in the San Luis Valley. Since 1996, GARNA has been assisting the Bureau of Land Management, the US Forest Service, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (including the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area), counties and local municipalities to accomplish specific projects. GARNA provides services to the public including the Youth Ecological Literacy Program serving over 1700 students a year, organizing public programs and field trips, providing interpretive information throughout the region and publishing and selling local guidebooks and history titles. GARNA administers the Chaffee County Heritage Area / Collegiate Peaks Scenic & Historic Byway under guidance of an appointed Heritage Area Advisory Board, the Stage and Rail Trail project, and is a lead partner in the Envision Chaffee County Recreation in Balance project.
GARNA also administers the Chaffee Green Sustainability program, a hiking club, a birding club, a photography club, an environmental book club, the community garden, Friends of Four Mile, and the Upper Arkansas Wilderness Volunteers.
