Mission Statement
As a non‑profit organization we are committed to the rescue, quality care, and adoption of companion animals into forever homes. We will always support and share the valuable lessons of kindness, respect, and guidance on responsible pet ownership.Our HistoryEGAPL Heart of RI was formally known as The East Greenwich Animal Protection League and was founded in 1976. It was started by a small group of passionate animal advocates, led by Dorothy Fahey, who wanted to create a safe haven for homeless and abandoned pets. Their shared vision was to establish an all volunteer organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming companion animals, at a time when very few resources for animal welfare existed in Rhode Island.
In 1978, the East Greenwich Animal Protection League (EGAPL) officially became Incorporated and received their 501c3 non-profit organization status.
As operations expanded, we moved into the East Greenwich Animal Hospital. This allowed us to rescue more animals and provided the space we needed to continue and grow. In April 2015, our temporary location at the East Greenwich Animal Hospital closed after 33 years in operation. This left us without a long-term facility and prompted an urgent search for a new location.
A life changing opportunity arose when long time supporter and animal lover, Dr. Andrew Martin, stepped up to help. He purchased the former Cranston Casting Company building and sold it to us at a very discounted price. This allowed us to fulfill our longtime goal of owning our own building and FINALLY having a place to call home.
After months of fundraising, community support, and extensive renovations, we proudly opened the doors of our new shelter at 44 Worthington Road in Cranston, RI.
Since then we have continued to grow as an organization. We have expanded our foster and adoption programs and increased our capacity to take in and care for more animals in need.
