Monday, October 13 2014, on my way home from getting my brakes fixed, I spotted a bunny in the side front yard of a house in my neighborhood. Only, the bunny didn’t fit the appearance of a wild bun. The ears were wrong, the color was off. I called my husband and asked him to look as he drove past.
He stopped the car, got out. It was a tan half-lop. Oh no. Storms were moving in. We needed to do something. Only, bun had no interest in being caught, and scooted up under a fence.
We rang the doorbell. The owner informed us that he had turned them (!!!) loose a week ago because they had had baby bunnies and the male had killed the kits and it had upset his children. They said the tan bunny was named Granola, but we didn’t hear a name for the grey one. I tried to spot Granola again, but she wasn’t out.
I posted to the Georgia House Rabbit Society, looking for assistance in rescuing, and went back out before bed, but bun was well and truly hidden. I worried all night long. The storms were bad, lots of thunder and lightning and some major tree downage.
Tuesday, October 14 2014, during the day, the GHRS reposted my cry for help, and some wonderful people stepped forwards with offers to help bunnyhunt. One swung by during the day, but didn’t see anyone.
On my way out the door from work, I snagged a Xerox box and my fleece jacket.
I pulled into the neighborhood, and lo and behold. There was bun.
She led me a merry chase, I ran around the bush while she hopped along inside it, eating all the while.
Then, she popped under a car while I waved my jacket at her, and finally, she bounced out and bopped along between the houses. I was wearing out and she was just playing a little game. She wasn’t stressed at all.
A boy on a bicycle rode up and asked me if I needed help. I said yes. He was so gentle, so easy with her, and he herded her over to me as pretty as you please. When I got my hands on her was when she freaked, and he plopped my jacket over her and she stopped fighting. I thanked the boy, he got on his bike and rode away, and I put Granola into the Xerox box.
A few minutes went by in my driveway, where we just sat and calmed down. I loved on Granola, and she settled in.
Next stop was the Georgia House Rabbit Society for a quick checkup and health evaluation. While we were there, she sacked out in my lap and went to sleep.
The GHRS loaned us a carrier and a small home for her, and a round of preventative meds plus hay and food.
My Mom adopted her and named her Marigold.
