Mačiću (Mah-Ch-Koo ) means "little kitten" in Croatian! When we adopted Mači (mah-chi) in 2020 he was covered in scars from being trapped in a puppy mill cage in California before being thrown out of a moving car. There were, of course, internal scars as well. He was a hell of a first dog for my husband, but they both learned how to take care of each other, and by the end were absolutely inseparable. Mači grew from being terrified and aggressive towards dogs and cats to living with his "stepmom" (our mama cat, aged 12 yrs at the time) and her two cat-sons (11 yrs) in such harmony that they ended up sleeping on top of each other. Mači always had trouble with other dogs, but after some hard work on both the human and canine ends, managed to flourish with one (only one--progress not perfection!) dog friendship--my best friend's 5 pound chihuahua named Maude. He was the gentlest of gentle giants at 85lbs, and they were absolutely obsessed with each other. All this from a dog who was so abused that if we picked up a stick at the park he would panic and cower because someone, sometime had hurt him with one. His gracious, gentle nature and sensitive soul were the epitomy of that "dog magic" we all try to explain to our non-dog friends . Sadly, this truly sweet, gentle and beautiful boxer boy had only enough time to show us--to teach us--the love he embodied until July 2021. He passed away from cancer on July 30th 2021, almost exactly 1.5 years after he came to us. We love you Mači, and thank you.
