About Us

The Houston SPCA, founded in 1924, is Houston's first and largest animal protection organization and shelter. Our mission is to promote commitment to and respect for all animals and free them from suffering, abuse and exploitation. The Houston SPCA is a private, non-profit charity, funded entirely by donations, which receives no funding from the government, United Way or other animal groups. With your support we provide services to more than 50,000 animals a year. Last year:

  • We investigated over 6,000 reports of animal cruelty.
  • Our 24-hour injured animal rescue ambulances are on the streets every day of the year- we rescued over 4,000 animals from immediate danger and distress.
  • Over 2,000 animals were fostered by caring families.
  • Our Veterinary Services team performed over 7,000 spay/neuter and lifesaving surgical procedures.
  • Over 150 senior fourth-year veterinary students at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences participated in a required, two-week rotation at the Houston SPCA where they learned about the full spectrum of animal treatment and welfare, including rescue and forensics investigations.
  • We reached over 8,000 children with our message of compassion and respect for life through our classroom visits, scouting programs and Critter Camp.
  • Our dedicated volunteers donated 76,372 hours of time.
  • We placed 100% of our healthy animals into loving new homes.
  • Our subsidiary, The Wildlife Center of Texas, admitted and cared for more than 10,000 native wildlife representing 350 species.
