About Us

The Houston SPCA, founded in 1924, is Houston's first and largest animal protection organization and shelter. Our mission is to promote commitment to and respect for all animals and free them from suffering, abuse and exploitation. The Houston SPCA is a private, non-profit charity, funded entirely by donations, which receives no funding from the government, United Way or other animal groups. With your support we provide services to more than 40,000 animals a year.

Last year:

  • The Houston SPCA and our subsidiary, The Wildlife Center of Texas, admitted and cared for over 28,000 cats and dogs, small mammals, birds, horses, farm animals, and native wildlife.
  • We investigated over 5,500 reports of animal abuse, neglect and cruelty.
  • Our 24-hour injured animal rescue ambulances are on the streets every day of the year and we rescued over 2,900 animals from immediate danger and distress.
  • Over 2,200 animals were fostered by caring families.
  • Our Veterinary Services team performed over 7,000 spay/neuter and lifesaving surgical procedures.
  • Over 150 senior fourth-year veterinary students at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences participated in a required, two-week rotation at the Houston SPCA where they learned about the full spectrum of animal treatment and welfare, including rescue and forensics investigations.
  • We reached more than 200,000 students and teachers over the past 20 years with our message of compassion and respect for life directly through our scout programs, classroom instruction and Critter Camps.
  • Our dedicated volunteers gave over 78,000 hours of services.
  • We placed 100% of our healthy animals into loving new homes.
  • The Houston SPCA was the lead nonprofit agency with boats in the water and boots on the ground responsible for animal-related Hurricane Harvey response efforts. Thanks to the support of kind-hearted and generous individuals, organizations and companies, we were able to:
    • Rescue animals from flooded homes for eight days straight via our highly trained water rescue teams.
    • Care for over 2,300 dogs and cats, and over 80 displaced horses, farm animals and native wildlife.
    • Reunite 300 animals with their original owners - including more than 30 cats, more than 150 dogs and over 50 horses.
    • Distribute over 120 tons of pet food, crates, bedding and other supplies to over 300 individuals and families and over 50 animal welfare organizations (private and public) through 17 Harris County Public Library branches and 27 Houston Food Bank distribution sites.
