I nominate my dog, Mr. Winston, as the Biggest Hero—because he saved my life, and gave me the strength to save his.

On January 8, 2025, we were among the five firefighter families who lost their homes in the devastating Altadena fire. My husband, a firefighter, was stationed at the Command Center for the Palisades fire that night, leaving just me and Mr. Winston to face the firestorm alone.

As flames approached and chaos unfolded, it was Mr. Winston who grounded me. His presence, his calm, and his trusting eyes gave me the courage I didn’t know I had. I knew I had to be strong—not just for me, but for him. His life depended on me, and in that moment, he gave me a reason to act. We escaped just in time. By the time my husband returned to try to save our home, it was already too late. We lost everything.

But we didn’t lose each other.

Mr. Winston is more than a pet—he is my source of strength. His big smile, gentle cuddles, and unconditional love help me face each new day. Together, we are healing—not just from the fire, but from the emotional toll of surviving and rebuilding.

He is my hero in every way, and I truly believe I wouldn't be here without him.
