Whiskey is a half-German shepherd, half-jawed cancer survivor with a second lease on life.

Whiskey was abandoned and tied to a post in York, South Carolina, with a golf-ball sized tumor on his jaw. The Animal Adoption League took in Whiskey and confirmed his cancer diagnosis. They thought they might have to put him down, but Whiskey had so much vigor when he come out of anesthesia, they decided to give him a chance. And so Whiskey was posted on their Facebook page as a “hospice” dog- the thought being that his cancer was terminal.

Whiskey spent a few months in the shelter before he found a home. After a second opinion from a specialist, it was determined Whiskey’s cancer was treatable- he would lose a part of his bottom jaw, but he would live. Now, his tongue hangs out almost all the time, including when he’s smiling (as pictured here). It’s been more than 6 years that Whiskey’s been cancer free!

Like his owner, Whiskey loves pizza crust, sleeping the day away on the couch at work, and going on hikes off leash. He brings great joy and hope to all who meet him.
