Sgt. Peepaw, formerly named Monster, was sadly and reluctantly surrendered to HES in March 2019. Certain life events made it impossible for his owner to keep a large dog anymore and it was clear the two had been separated under sad circumstances. At this time we were still reeling from the loss of our 9 year old boxer boy who had passed away six months previously to cancer. Our hearts were absolutely broken and we thought his had to be breaking also. We brought him home the day we met him and he immediately fit into our family like a missing puzzle piece. A week after coming home he developed pnumonia due to complications associated with kennel cough, and a previously undiagnosed hiatial hernia. For a few days we didn't think he'd make it. He went 5 days without eating and barely sleeping. Fortunately he pulled through it with the aid of his veterinarians, much love and a strong will to live. In the four months we've had him he has put on 15 lbs and is now a spunky force to reckon with. Peepaw has us cracking up constantly. He continues to surprise us with his tenacious love for play and has helped us heal our wounded hearts. What a rewarding relationship this has turned out to be. I am truly grateful!
