Tell us your Kitten Rescue Story
I spotted a very young feral cat this past May, 2015 at my workplace in Woodland Hills, in the hills just south of the 101 freeway. I knew that if it were a female, she would soon become pregnant. With the help of my Kitten Rescue friend Sandra Harrison, we trapped her immediately and took her to Fix Nation. As it turned out, she was lactating and had given birth a few weeks earlier. Within 24 hours of her spay, I released her back to the spot where I trapped her, hoping her feral kittens were still alive. Within a few weeks, there were several kitten spottings, and I was desperate to rescue them, with hopes that they could be socialized. On Saturday, June 13, 2015, in the middle of the day, I spotted a gorgeous lynx-point Siamese kitten out back of my workplace. It took one look at me and ran off. The next night I returned and set several traps, hoping to get any kittens out there. Partial success! There it was (gender still unknown), the little lynx-point, scared, but safe in the trap. I took him home and put him in my spare bathroom. He was beyond terrified, flinging himself against the walls in an attempt to escape. He did not eat, drink or use his litter box the entire night. The next morning, another KR friend, Melanie Teller, came over to help me assess the kitten and give it a bath. Little lynx-point was first thought to be a girl, but turned out to be a male. He bit me and he bit Melanie--hard--as we attempted to bathe him and get rid of the hundreds of fleas covering his tiny body. Melanie, an expert feral kitten tamer, took him home with her to begin the socialization process. He got his first vaccinations, and, since he weighed 2.2 pounds, he was neutered. He was also combo tested and was negative for both leukemia and FiV. Melanie had to go out of town, so little Alex came to stay with me. Since both Melanie and I have a LOT of rescued kitties, we intended to put little Alex up for adoption. He was gorgeous and highly adoptable. My good KR friend Minoo Rahbar, was helping me get Alex's ad up on Petfinder. I wrote a brief description about how beautiful and sweet little Alex was and sent it to Minoo. However, before she could place the ad online, I was already in love with this adorable little guy, who loved to sit on my shoulder and purr. He is now 4 months old, nearly 5 pounds and a beloved member of my multi-cat, multi-dog household. While his feral mom and (maybe) siblings are still in Woodland Hills, little Alex has a fur-ever home with me.
